 Dalvanius and the Fascinations 2000
DALVANIUS and the FASCINATIONS 2000

Maori Singer / Songwriter / Producer DALVANIUS was described by England's NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS music paper as the SVENGALI of Kiwi Ethno-Kitsch. 1999 marks the entertainer's 30th year in the Music industry.

When he is not on stage somewhere around the world he is in a New Zealand recording studio producing his latest project for his MAUI Record Label or touring the world giving lectures on MOKOMOKAI (preserved Maori Heads).

In 1969, with his brother Eddie and his sister Barletta, he entered Wellington's Radio 2ZB "TALENT SCOPE" as THE FASCINATIONS. The trio won first prize singing Willie Nelson's "FUNNY HOW TIME SLIPS AWAY". He then became Musical Director and pianist for The Supremes-style Porirua femme vocal trio, "THE SHEVELLES"

1970 saw him accompany the group to Australia. After touring with them for six months he revived THE FASCINATIONS, boosting the line-up to four with his brother, Timothy. The group toured extensively playing the lucrative R.S.L. and R.S.A club circuits throughout Australia. This line-up dissolved after eight months. Timothy returned to New Zealand joining The PATEA MAORI CLUB. Eddie married and Barletta, at the age of sixteen, took her band, THE HYMARKIES, to Vietnam, Bangkok and Asia, playing to the troops. "BIG D" (a name given to him by Maori entertainers) sang solo around the Australian circuit. Barletta returned after an eighteen month Asian sojourn and teamed up with her brother DALVANIUS in 1973.

A close friend, Tongan / Fijian vocalist PAULA WILLIAMS joined the duo and DALVANIUS, and THE FASCINATIONS literally crashed onto the Australian circuit. The singer took his group to the top of the Australian entertainment scene; they debuted the opening series of concerts at the Sydney Opera House supporting PETULA CLARK. The concert, beamed world-wide by Channel 9, gave the singer his first critical accolades. One week later he was invited back to support DIAHANN CARROLL

In 1974 he signed a recording deal with REPRISE RECORDS releasing two singles "LOVE TRAIN" and what has become his anthem "RESPECT YOURSELF". After a tour through the Pacific Islands and Hawaii, DALVANIUS took his group toTasmania's WREST POINT CASINO where he headlined his own revue with six dancing girls for one year.

Between these dates the singer and his group became one of Australia's most sought-after "session" backing vocalists. Their vocals can be heard on recordings by "JOHNNY O'KEEFE," "REG LYNDSAY," "RENEE GEYER" and rockers "RICHARD CLAPTON," "GULLIVER SMITH," "COL JOYE" and many more. His TV appearances world-wide have been many.

In 1975 he teamed up with record producer Richard Batchens and signed a recording / publishing deal with FESTIVAL RECORDS, Australia. Two singles were released - his self-penned "CHESSBOARD OF LOVE," and the disco hit "VOODOO LADY".

In 1976 he joined the Australian rock band SHERBET'S travelling rock tour "LIFE IS FOR LIVING" The TV special of the same name catapulted the singer onto the Oz rock scene,. Composers Clive Shakespere and Garth Porter wrote, produced and played on the DALVANIUS single "CANBERRA WE'RE WATCHING YOU". The single's release resulted in his appearance on ABC's pop charts series "COUNTDOWN". "CHESSBOARD OF LOVE", "VOODOO LADY" and "CANBERRA WE'RE WATCHING YOU" all won the singer and his group awards in the Australian Soul Appreciation Society Awards.

Tours with many top 'soul' stars followed. ISAAC HAYES, DIONNE WARWICK, THE POINTER SISTERS, EARTHA KITT, DARLENE LOVE, OSIBISA, TINA TURNER, THE PLATTERS, THE COMMODORES, and CRYSTALS to name a few. ROGER DAVIES, Manager of SHERBET, was the guiding inspiration behind DALVANIUS' career. In an interview with "RIP IT UP", New Zealand's rock bible DALVANIUS stated of Davies "Our association was brief, but he told me to be original and look for a Maori sound and stop imitating black singers".

ROGER DAVIES relocated to America and has managed OLIVIA NEWTON- JOHN, MICK JAGGER and is currently managing TINA TURNER. The agent's words were to have a profound effect on DALVANIUS Late 1979. The singer accepted a contract to Asia and played in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Bangkok. With the death of his mother in 1979 DALVANIUS returned to New Zealand, inheriting an instant family - a brother and adopted nephew. With Barletta he started the TV series "ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK" and continued touring. With the session skills he learnt in Australia he set up his own production company. His first project was with long time friend, the late PRINCE TUI TEKA He arranged and produced the gold award winning album "THE MAN, THE MUSIC, THE LEGEND". "E IPO," the album's first single, rocketed to No. 1 on the New Zealand pop charts. DALVANIUS and sister Barletta then went into the studio with vocal trio THE CONSORTS recording "MAORIS ON 55". The single crashed into the charts and peaked at No. 3.

In 1983 DALVANIUS decided to form MAUI RECORDS. On tour to New Zealand's East Coast he visited the home of the late NGOI PEWHAIRANGI, composer of "E IPO"

"She was to change my whole life" - what was supposed to be a one night sleepover ended up a week and he returned for a further three weeks. The duo collaborated and composed over fifteen songs and included the songs in the script for "POI E: THE MUSICAL" At the same time they derived the concept for "POI E: THE ANIMATED SERIES". Those weeks together were to change the course of New Zealand music and cultural history. Three songs in particular proved popular on DALVANIUS' many tours. He decided to record four songs with the PATEA MAORI CLUB. The NGOI PEWHAIRANGI / DALVANIUS collaboration "POI-E" reached number one in 1994. Prior to its release DALVANIUS went on an American / European solo tour organised by a London-based agent, Richard Micalef. DALVANIUS was also a member of the New Zealand contingent to M.I.D.E.M., the music tours trade fair in Cannes, France. He continued on his solo tour and returned to new Zealand the week Poi-E reached No. 1. It stayed four weeks at the top of the charts and then reached gold and platinum status

He then released "AKU RAUKURA". This reached number ten and this too became a gold record. DALVANIUS' MAUI RECORDS discovered and recorded TASTE OF BOUNTY. Kevin Hodges went on to bands like AOTEAROA and founded SOUTH SIDE OF BOMBAY. He also originally discovered and produced TAMARA RENATA, whose theme from "ONCE WERE WARRIORS" was to become a classic.

MAUI RECORDS signed CARA PEWHAIRANGI and her "HAEREMAI," the theme from the film "NGATI," has also become a classic. DALVANIUS has written music for ads and documentaries including "HAKA" and "CARMEN" (about New Zealand's famous transsexual.) and produced the award-winning music to the "1990 SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND", a 1 year TV campaign for Saatchi and Saatchi.

He hosted the TV series tracing the history of soul music called "SWEET SOUL MUSIC" and while recording the series met MOANA MANIAPOTO JACKSON. He signed the Auckland-based singer and collaborated with lyricist NGAMARU RAERINO on the singer's debut single "KUA MAKONA". DALVANIUS hired top husband / wife duo ARDIJAH to record the vocal / instrumental backings for the song which resulted in 2 NZ Music Award Nominations with Moana being a finalist in the New Female Vocalist section. The Song was adopted by the Alcohol Liquor Advisory Councils Alcohol with Moderation campaign with the release of a Half hr promotion video. The music video was entered in the International Film & Television Awards in NEW YORK and DALVANIUS won the grand prize for BEST MUSIC SOUNDTRACK. He was presented with a Gold Microphone. MOANA AND THE MOA HUNTERS then recorded "ECSTASY" from DALVANIUS and NGOI' PEWHARANGI "POI-E: THE MUSICAL" before she changed labels to South Side Records.

While on the "POI-E: THE MUSICAL" world tour in 1996, NGOI PEWHAIRANGI passed away. The singer and his PATEA MAORI CLUB were playing in London. "DALVANIUS AND THE PATEA MAORI CLUB TAKE LONDON BY STORM" said the New Zealand Herald. The group played sell-out concerts at the Commonwealth Institute, Queen Elizabeth II Hall on South Bank, The Beck Theatre and starred at the Emporium in a benefit concert for NELSON MANDELA televised by Channel 4. In seven days the group made five TV appearances including T.V.A.M. (Wide Awake Club), GOOD MORNING BRITAIN (twice in one week) and BLUE PETER. The group also visited the House Of Commons, hosted by the then Labour Leader Neil Kinnock.

On tour in America DALVANIUS and his group played in New York, Washington DC, the Te Maori exhibition in St. Louis and a series of concerts in Los Angeles including Disneyland. The singer told "Billboard": "The highlight of our tour has been the concert supporting The Violent Femmes at Irving Plaza, New York"

On their return to New Zealand "HEI KONEI RA" reached Number 21 on the pop charts. An invitation to sing at the Royal Command Performance in Edinburgh. Scotland gave the singer a chance to perform two songs from his musical. While in Scotland he met ANDREWW LLOYD WEBBER who was also part of the Royal Variety Concert. Other stars included KIRK DOUGLAS, JULIETTE PROWSE, LINDA EVANS, The cast of CATS, STARLIGHT EXPRESS and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR; SARAH BRIGHTMAN and ROLF HARRIS

DALVANIUS' international music career was boosted with the success of the film "NGATI" which won an award at the CANNES FILM FESTIVAL. His haunting soundtrack to the film was nominated for a New Zealand Music Award plus a New Zealand Film and Television Award; his video for "HAREMAI" (The theme from NGATI) was nominated for a New Zealand Music Award also. DALVANIUS won the best music soundtrack for MOANA'S "KUA MAKONA" at the INTERNATIONAL FILM AND VIDEO awards in New York. He was presented with a solid gold microphone. Between his busy production work he still tours extensively. "When I do my solo spots my show is a mixture of all my musical influences."

In 1988 the singer helped to set up "AOTEAROA RADIO," New Zealand's first national Maori radio network. As breakfast DJ, and his dual role as musical director, the singer programmed 80% indigenous Kiwi music (Maori and English)

In 1990 he starred in and wrote the soundtrack to the pacific film "Te Rua". He travelled to Berlin starred in & researched for the films musical score. As part of his research he decided to attend the PINK FLOYD WALL CONCERT & was inspired by the BERLIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA to write an ARIA for the films soundtrack. The film was shot at the EAST BERLIN MUSEUM. The synopsis of the film was about a group of Young Maori holding German Artifacts for ransom trying to negotiate the return of Maori Artifacts . While in the Museum the singer saw Preserved Maori Heads "MOKMOKAI" This had a long lasting effect on the singer and thru the glass casing he was inspired to sing a waiata to the heads. On completion of filming he embarked on a series of concerts in London. Dalvanius had met Nigerian percussion vocalist "FOLO GRAFF" in London in 1986 while touring Britain with the Patea Maori Club. He renewed their friendship flew GRAFF out to NZ with Graff guesting on the Afro/Pacific inspired "CHUDKA POY" the theme to the TE RUA soundtrack.

On his return to New Zealand he decided to compose a Wagner inspired classical piece for the TE RUA Soundtrack. Inspired by the Pink Floyd and Mokomokai encounters. in Germany he wrote the music with long time friend STUART PEARCE and long time lyricist friend NGAMARU RAERINO. "ANEI RA" the ARIA to the MOKOMOKAI & TAONGA MAORI was born . 1990 Also saw the singer join the research team and private staff member of the late MAUI POMARE who was chairman of the National Museum Of New Zealand (Now called TE PAPA TONGAREWA)

He worked for the Pomare Family Taonga Trust & hired the Late Pomare as a consultant for his proposed feature film "MOKO" in lue of payment the singer helped collate data on several of MAUI POMARE sensitive negotiations for the return from several Museums of Preserved Maori Heads. POMARE was successful in negotiating Repatriations from the Manchester Museum, Saffron Walden Museum, Belfast, Dublin Museums, Edinburugh University, Whitby, & Liverpool Museums to name a few plus several museums in Europe & Australia. On Pomares death the singer was asked by the POMARE family to carry on with their late fathers work .

He was also asked by KO HUIARAU (National Council of Maori Chiefs) to Take on the title of KAI ARIKI TU WAIRANGI and become the chief negotiator of TAONGA MAORI for the Maori Parliament. At first the singer felt he was not qualified and saught the sanctions of his tribal Elders he reserved his decision. KO HUIARAU was formed in 1816 before the TREATY of WAITANGI was signed. QUEEN VICTORIA in 1863 was invited by the Council to become a Chief also a title she accepted. She was given the title TE KOTUKU RERENGA TAHI (The Heron of a single flight). QUEEN ELIZABETH inherited that title from her father. In 1869 the then DUKE of EDINBURGH was welcomed to Aotearoa by the Council of Chiefs. UPOKO ARIKI (Head Chief ) of Ko HUIARAU on his visit was TE KEPA TE RANGI HIWI NUI (Major KEMP). In his welcoming speech to the Duke he referred to him as the MOKOPUNA (Granchild)of TE KOTUKU RERENGA TAHI. 1991 saw the release of the film TE RUA & of "CHUDKA POPOY".the title track from "TE RUA" . Although nominated for several NZ Film Awards including a Nomination for Dalvanius for Best Soundtrack the film Bombed at the Box office.

Dalvanius resumed completing the script to "POI E THE MUSICAL".& decided to add CHUDKA POPOY & the ARIA "ANEI RA" to the POI E the MUSICAL score. He had put the MUSICAL project on hold following the death of his mentor NGOI PEWHAIRANGI. The same year he tutored several Maori music students, teaching them all the facets of the New Zealand music industry. He discovered among his students' singer/ songwriter JAY REI and signed him to MAUI Records. Rei's self-titled EP was nominated for two New Zealand music awards and he was a finalist in the most promising male vocalist category. 1993 saw the DALVANIUS play himself in the T.V. series "RADIO WHA WAHO" and he finally completed the "POI E THE MUSICAL" script. 1994. The musical had it's world premiere in Patea with T.V 's "HEARTLAND" filming an hour-long documentary about its evolution. Ten years after the theme song reached number one the musical was staged. After a six-week sell-out New Zealand tour the concert version of the musical played at the B.Y.U. in Hawaii. DALVANIUS then embarked on a solo tour with dates in El Paso, Texas; Las Vegas, Boulder City, and Los Angeles. A four-week Australian tour followed and on his return to New Zealand he performed the ARIA for the musical "ANEI RA" with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra to over three hundred and fifty thousand people at Philips "OPERA IN THE PARK" at the AUCKLAND DOMAIN. DALVANIUS has, for the past 6 years, played SANTA CLAUS at the annual "CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK" fund-raising concerts for the New Zealand Variety Club. He releases every year his version of "WHITE CHRISTMAS - MARY'S BOY CHILD" with royalties going to various charities.

In 1996 he teamed up with ex-lead vocalist of the CRYSTALS, MARILYN BYERS ALI and the duo's show at Wellingtons "INTERNATIOAL FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS" was critically acclaimed. The singer joined Marilyn in the cast of the Palmerston North Operatic Society production of "HAIR" and a five-week New Zealand tour followed. DALVANIUS, impressed with Byers Ali's vocal talents, recorded her singing ten New Zealand composed songs. These included numbers by HERBS, GREG JOHNSTON, THE WARRATAHS, WAYNE MASON and her version of "ECSTASY" from "POI E: THE MUSICAL". DALVANIUS also teamed up with her vocally in "HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION". Byers Ali returned to New York and Dalvanius teamed up with her for a series of concerts late 1996. 1996 saw DALVANIUS' radio show KIWI HITS 96 debut on ATIAWA FM.

The 100% New Zealand music content show culls Kiwi songs by Kiwi artists from the R.I.A.N.Z. weekly top 50, and showcases them in New Zealand's very own "Top of the Kiwi Pops". The television version of the radio show is in development 1997 was an even busier year for the singer. He has completed the script to a full-length feature film, called 'MOKO' and is directing three one-hour documentaries on the subject of preserved Maori heads.called MOKOMOKAI.".

MOKO is in developement and the Documentary series is due for completion in mid 2000. The singer had approached several broadcasters in New Zealand to air his series but the topic was considered to be too controversial so the project has been a labour of love by the singer & many friends. In late 1998 "POI E: THE MUSICAL" was revived and he has just completed final mixes to the English songs from the musical. The soundtrack to "POI E: THE MUSICAL" (Maori songs) was released late in 1996 and has achieved platinum status.

The singer has teamed up with the creative computer graphic team DANIEL CROTHERS and LUCAS YOUNG on a 1 and a half hr 3D animated feature "POI E THE MYTHS AND LEGENDS". The feature, adapted from his children's story collaboration with the late NGOI PEWHAIRANGI, brings to life the characters depicted on the cover of the Patea Maori Club's award-winning CD. The production is expected to be completed in 2001 The singer wound up 1997 playing his annual role "HANA KOKO" (SANTA CLAUS) to an estimated audience of one and a half million in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and TV3's live broadcast of COCA COLA'S CHRISTMAS IN THE PARK.

1998 began with the singer composer returning to the studio laying down rhythm tracks for a solo album project for the Millennium. In March he departed for a tour of the U.S.A. It was a combined singing and research tour for his MOKOMOKAI EDUCATION trust. On his arrival in New York he was met by Singer MARILYN BYERS ALI .& CRYSTALS singer GRETCHEN.

While in New York the singer was the guest of the American Museum of Natural History. In 1907 Englishman Horatio Gordan Robley sold 35 Tattooed Preserved Maori Heads to the Museum after several years trying to negotiate their return to their homeland. Gordan had served in Tauranga fighting the Maori at the gate Pa war. While working with Maori in Matapihi he had a liason with a Maori woman which resulted in a son called Hamiora Tu. Tu had a son and daughter with the daughter TE HEPIWHARA HAMIORA TU travelling to Taranaki and marrying into Dalvanius family & tribe Ngati Ruanui. In 97 the great grand daughters Harete Teki, Googs Tapsell, and Huna Broughton asked the singer (their nephew) to negotiate the return of their great grand fathers collection to New Zealand.

After his week at the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY holding informal discussions he flew to Salt lake city where negotiations began with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to return a Mokomokai held in a private collection. He then flew to EL PASO Texas for a 5 night season at the Border steakhouse & also attended a conference meeting Several American Indian groups members of the Native American Federation of Tribes. On the agenda was several Repatriations from several American Institutions currently in progress. He then flew on to Los Angeles for talks at an indigenous peoples conference again on the return of ancestral remains to sorce cultures. The conference was Precided over by delegates from HUI MALAMA (a Hawaiian Indeginous Sovereignty Group) & members of the NATIVE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF INDIGENOUS TRIBES The conference was called to discuss NAGPRA (The Native American, Grave, Protection Reburial Act.). It was also to update delegates of the successful REPATRIATIONS from American Institutions holding Native American remains. Dalvanius was guest speaker and lecturer at both conferences.

The majority of 98 was spent giving lecture tours and fundraising for the Mokomokai Education Trust. He capped off 98 with another national tour as Hana Koko SANTA.at COCA COLAS XMAS IN THE PARK. In 99 the singer revamped DALVANIUS & THE FASCINATIONS and POI E THE MUSICAL. The new FASCINATIONS are RIAH HEKE and MAXINE MIHAKA. In a recent interview with the IWI radio network the singer said.

MAXINE & RIAH are two of the most dynamic maori performers I have ever met. They were already established singers in their own right, I have literally plucked them from an already successful duo collectively and individually and reformed the Fascinations. They can still walk away from the group and easily stand alone. The exciting thing for me is knowing that POI E THE MUSICAL / THE CONCERT has 2 new lead stars.

The singer was so impressed with the twosome he rushed them into the studio with arranger John Diamond and rerecorded an updated version of "ECSTASY" from "POI E THE MUSICAL" Along with the PATEA MAORI CLUB, MAXINE AND RIAH made their debut at an 11 day season of POI E THE MUSICAL / THE CONCERT at the 1999 ROYAL EASTER SHOW IN AUCKLAND. TVNZ filmed excerpts from the season and this received rave reviews when aired and requests for a replay. Queens Birthday weekend saw POI E THE MUSICAL / THE CONCERT take the stage at the AOTEA CENTRE with the entire cast receiving tumultuous applause.

3 tracks from the Musical have just had music videos completed they are 'ANEI RA' (which is also the theme to MOKOMOKAI THE DOCUMENTARY, 'E PAPA' (The Gumboot dance) and a re release of 'NGOI NGOI' which stars DALVANIUS, MOANA MANIAPOTO JACKSON, MIKA, DAVE DOBBYN, CARA PEWHAIRANGI, & ANNIE CRUMMER. Dalvanius is also back producing a new album for his ex musical Director femme Lesbian guitarist LUEZ HUEZ and an instrumental guitar solo album by long time arranger and ARDIJAH Guitarist JOHN DIAMOND.

DALVANIUS embarks on a national tour fundraising for the MOKOMOKAI EDUCATION TRUST Fundraising to finance the return of the ROBLEY COLLECTION TO NEW ZEALAND & HIS FORTHCOMING TOUR TO GREAT BRITAIN FOR THE ROBLEY FAMILY & to SEEK THE RETURN OF THE MOKOMOKAI IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM COLLECTION. This year has seen the Singers Uncle HOANI HEREMAIA pass away. The Tribal Elder was a supporter of the singers campaign to America & forthcoming trip to the USA. Also to him accepting the role of Chief in KO HUIARAU. In a Press statement to the media preceding his induction the singer revealed why he had taken so long with his decision." IN MAORIDOM TO ACCEPT SUCH AN IMPORTANT ROLE WHILE AN ELDER OF OUR TRIBE IN SENIORITY AND MANA IS STILL ALIVE WOULD BE ADMITING I WISH TO STAND IN HIS SHOES AND TO WANT HIS DEATH" On June the 25th 1999 MAUI DALVANIUS PRIME accepted his title KAI ARIKI TU WAIRANGI.

1999 has been an important year for the MOKOMOKAI EDUCATION TRUST also. Since his return from New York he has been touring New Zealand holding lectures on the MOKOMOKAI taking the message to the people. He also held talks with TE PAPA & the AUCKLAND MUSEUM about one or the other being the Repository of the ROBLEY collection should they be returned. He completed his report about his American trip and dispatched it to the AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. A week after recieving the Report he recieved an E mail from the USA saying the MUSEUM was beginning negotiations with TE PAPA.

MOKOMOKAI EDUCATION TRUST

During his auspicious career as the Chairman of the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NEW ZEALAND the late MAUI WOODBINE POMARE spent many weeks touring New Zealand and the world giving lectures on Mokomokai. Wherever he went his informative lively lectures were acclaimed. He admitted to me however that at times because of his position he was restricted in revealing many sensative issues relating to Repatriation, & reburial. His death left a void in this very important area of Education. In my work with researching, and writing my book and also in directing the forthcoming 3 x 1 hr TV series MOKOMOKAI the Documentary, I am amazed at the limited knowlege many New Zealanders have on this most important aspect of our pre European & post Colonisation past. It was this in mind that I decided to form the trust under the auspices of the PATEA MAORI CULTURAL THEATRE TRUST. Since its inception in December 1997 we have held countless Lectures throughout New Zealand and also in the USA.1999 has been no exception. I will be giving more lectures when I visit the United Kingdom and the USA towards the end of 1999 and we have a busy schedule of Lectures to the end of the yr. The lectures cover the history of Mokomokai, Pre European and Post European Maori burial customs. The art of Moko, the preparation of the Mokomokai, Fundamentalist christian attitudes & Tino Rangatira advocates attitudes to ownership. Other issues covered include Museums, Repatriations, who owns them when they are returned, should they be buried. The ROBLEY collection is a major component of The lectures .
