POI-E WORLD MUSIC AND DANCE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Poi-E World Music Festival was also an idea by the late Ngoi Pewhairangi. The Aotearoa Performing Arts Festival of New Zealand has been in existence for over ten years. The late Ngoi Pewhairangi was a frequent judge, in several categories, including the Poi dance and the Karanga and Waiata Ringa.

Although impressed with the high quality and standards of the senior performers, she felt the festival did not cater well enough for young people and contemporary art and music expression. In 1997 Nephi Prime accompanied Aotearoa festival judge Tommy Taurima on his tour of European and American cultural festivals. He negotiated the franchises to hold heats with indigenous groups from 5 countries. This has increased to 11 countries besides New Zealand holding their own national competition with the winning teams congregating in New Zealand at the Poi-E World Music Cultural Festival.

The World Champion playoff will be held in Taranaki in the year 1999. Franchises will be negotiated for the rexcording of albums and a television special.

Performance in excellence will be assessed in the following categories:
  • world's best cultural group (traditional & contemporary)
  • Best composition (traditional & contemporary)
  • Best costume
etc etc

The competiton will be held bi-annually.
One of the prerequisites for entry is 100% original lyrics and music. No adaptations of existing material will be permitted.
Every group who enters the competition must learn and perform the festival's theme siong, the award-wionning Poi-E.
Franchises to hold heats in all territories are still available.
